Putnam County Historical Preservations Advisory Commission: Hudson Highlands Scale Model

Nearing completion is a scale model of the Hudson Highlands. The model represents 16 nautical miles from Peekskill – Haverstraw Bay to Beacon- Newburgh Bay, rendered it a scale of 400 feet in 1 inch, both horizontally and vertically. The model is 20 feet long and 4 feet wide. Depicted are the Hudson River and its environs as it would have looked to Henry Hudson and his crew on the Half Moon in the year 1609. Mountains, tributaries, islands, peninsulas, lakes and other geographical features are included. On completion, they will be trimmed with realistic foliage, rock formations, and clear epoxy for water and an assortment of techniques to create a natural look. In addition, a model of the ship Half Moon will be made. At the scale of the model, the ship will be about a quarter of an inch long, providing an interesting perspective.

Alongside the model will be placed twenty-four explanatory plaques with photographs, drawings, paintings, and text. These will represent geological, geographical and historical facts as well as contemporary information.

Construction of the model is in the former fire engine bay of Lake Carmel, currently above Arts on the Lake. Exhibition sites will be determined. The model can be disarticulated into three sections for convenient transportation.

A small group of modelers have been working over the past several months. With increasing our commitment of time, we expect that the model will be completed by the end of August.

While the present site is ideal for construction, it is not suitable for exhibiting the model. The Commission will be exploring locations where the model may be shown on a temporary basis. Adequate space on all sides, easy public access, and adequate security are required for an organization hosting the model. In addition, it would be desirable to develop a group of docents for special public or private showings. A docent may choose to concentrate on one aspect of the Hudson Highlands that could be easily demonstrated in the model. Examples are: the Revolutionary War Strategies and Battles, Geology, Flora and Fauna, Human Developments, Geographical Highlights, characteristics of “The River That Flows Both Ways”, the Hudson River School of Painting, etc. Our staff modelers would be pleased to assist in directing potential docents to productive resources for information and/or conducting teaching sessions.
